First Day Hikes Set for Jan. 1 at State Parks in Connecticut, Wisconsin and Maine

The annual program marks New Year’s Day with wellness-focused walks linked to America’s 250th observances.

Overview

  • Connecticut’s DEEP will offer in-person and self-guided hikes, walks, tours and programs at 16 state park and forest locations.
  • Most Connecticut guided outings are 1 to 3 miles and begin between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with free entry for CT-registered vehicles under Passport to Parks.
  • About 30 Wisconsin state parks plan First Day Hikes ranging from one to three miles, with some sites also offering snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
  • Wisconsin participants can join the hikes at no cost, though a state park vehicle admission pass may still be required for entry or parking.
  • Maine will host guided hikes at Camden Hills, Holbrook Island, Sebago Lake and Two Lights, with additional self-guided options and virtual visits available.
