First Buses Reach Machu Picchu Under Police Escort as Temporary Transport Deal Takes Hold

Authorities are managing a fragile transition pending a formal tender with defined operating rules.

Overview

  • Perú Rail transported the first two Inversiones San Antonio de Torontoy buses by rail platforms to Machu Picchu Pueblo without incident under a deployment of about 100 police.
  • SERNANP authorization for the new fleet was affirmed, and Perú Rail reiterated it is only providing safe transport services rather than running the Hiram Bingham bus operation.
  • A PCM-facilitated pact and a Urubamba municipal contingency plan cleared the way for shared service with Consettur as phased transfers continue to move a planned total of 18 buses, two per platform trip.
  • The platforms and units had been repaired after brake-hose sabotage reported earlier this week, and authorities maintained close security to prevent interference with the convoy.
  • With unresolved questions over ticketing, fueling, maintenance and bus allocation, the UGM asked the PCM to convene a high-level technical table to address Tramusa labor risks as Urubamba prepares a new tender in the coming weeks.
