First B-52 With New AESA Radar Arrives at Edwards for Test Campaign

Testing through 2026 will shape a production decision underpinning the B-52’s broader overhaul into the 2050s.

Overview

  • The upgraded bomber completed a Dec. 8 ferry from Boeing’s San Antonio facility to Edwards AFB with crews from the 49th Test Evaluation Squadron and the 419th Flight Test Squadron.
  • The Raytheon-developed AN/APQ-188 replaces the aging APQ-166, adding all‑weather navigation, high‑resolution ground mapping and improved targeting with greater maintainability.
  • The 412th Test Wing will conduct ground and flight evaluations through 2026 to validate performance and inform whether to move the upgrade into production for the 76‑aircraft fleet.
  • The radar is a variant of systems on the F-15E/EX and F/A-18, with Boeing detailing new processors, dual 8x20‑inch touch displays, fighter‑style controllers and upgraded cooling.
  • Air Force leaders said the milestone advances readiness and deterrence as the service modernizes the B-52 alongside the incoming B-21 for a future two-bomber force.
