First Auto Rake Reaches Kashmir by Rail, Delivering 116 Maruti Cars to Anantnag

The USBRL freight link now enables direct vehicle deliveries to the Valley, reducing highway reliance.

Overview

  • Indian Railways carried the consignment from Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar in-plant Gati Shakti Terminal to Anantnag, completing about 850 km in roughly 45 hours from October 1 to 3.
  • The rake comprised 25 New Modified Goods wagons transporting 116 passenger vehicles, including Brezza, Dzire, WagonR and S-Presso models.
  • The train reached the newly operational Anantnag Goods Shed after crossing the Chenab arch bridge, a key USBRL structure billed as the world’s highest railway arch.
  • Railway and company officials said the move will cut costs and congestion while speeding deliveries, and local dealers reported vehicles arriving faster and in better condition than by road.
  • The automobile shipment follows August’s first cement rake and September’s apple parcel runs on the line, aligning with PM GatiShakti goals as officials indicate similar dispatches and other manufacturers are likely to follow.
