First Atmospheric River Targets Bay Area Late Tuesday Into Wednesday

Advisories highlight gusty southerly winds, king-tide flooding risk, beneficial rainfall, and likely commute delays.

Overview

  • A Wind Advisory runs from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 4 p.m. Wednesday, with widespread gusts of 35 to 45 mph and up to about 55 to 60 mph on higher peaks and ridgelines.
  • Rainfall is forecast to reach 1 to 2 inches in most valleys, with up to roughly 2.5 inches in higher elevations such as Mount Tamalpais and the coastal mountains of northwest Sonoma County.
  • A Coastal Flood Advisory tied to king tides is in effect from late Tuesday morning through Saturday afternoon for low-lying shoreline areas around the Bay and along the Santa Cruz–Monterey coast.
  • Forecasters expect slowed commutes, scattered power outages and minor flooding in poorly drained or low-lying spots, while main rivers like the Russian and Napa are not expected to flood.
  • Beach hazards return after the rain with large northwest swell bringing rip currents, sneaker waves and breakers up to 12 to 15 feet through the weekend.
