First Abuse Claim Against Abbé Pierre Seeks Reparations
A victim of sexual abuse by the late priest has formally requested compensation, marking the first such claim outside the judicial system.
- A man who was sexually abused by Abbé Pierre as a 13-year-old in the early 1980s has filed for reparations through the Independent National Instance of Recognition and Reparation (INIRR).
- This is the first known request for compensation related to the 33 accusations of sexual violence against Abbé Pierre, some involving minors at the time of the alleged incidents.
- The abuse allegations span from the 1950s to the 2000s but cannot be pursued criminally due to the priest's 2007 death and statute of limitations.
- The claims were revealed in reports commissioned by Emmaüs and the Fondation Abbé Pierre, organizations tied to the priest, to investigate his conduct.
- In response to the allegations, the Fondation Abbé Pierre has rebranded as the 'Fondation pour le Logement des Défavorisés' to distance itself from the late priest's legacy.
