Overview
- The first Manhattanhenge of 2025 occurred on May 28 at 8:13 p.m. ET with half the sun bisected by the horizon and on May 29 at 8:12 p.m. ET when the full sun hovered between skyscrapers.
- Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson coined the term in 1997 after noticing a Stonehenge-like alignment in Manhattan’s grid.
- Traditional vantage points include 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street and 57th Street as well as Hunter’s Point South Park in Long Island City.
- Manhattanhenge resurfaces about three weeks before and after the summer solstice, with the next half-sun and full-sun displays scheduled for July 11 and July 12.
- The DIY event depends on clear skies and unobstructed east-west views, drawing crowds armed with cameras and tripods to celebrate the urban sunset spectacle.
