Fireworks Stall Explodes Outside Xilitla Cemetery, Injuring Five

A state protection agency, together with the state attorney general, has opened an investigation to determine cause and responsibility.

Overview

  • A fireworks vending stall exploded near the municipal cemetery in Xilitla on Monday, Nov. 2, during Día de Muertos activities and caused a visible column of smoke and several vehicle fires.
  • Authorities say five people were injured, including three minors, and the municipal government named the victims and reported that most have been discharged while one patient was transferred to a hospital in Ciudad Valles.
  • Local emergency teams — Protección Civil, firefighters, public safety officers and paramedics — closed nearby roads, controlled the blazes and provided on‑site care and transport for the wounded.
  • Officials say the stall was reportedly operating without authorization and that the Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil deployed personnel to work with the Fiscalía General del Estado on a formal probe to assign responsibility.
  • The municipality suspended the Festival of Globos de Cantoya as a precaution, offered economic and logistical support to affected families, and faces renewed scrutiny over enforcement of pyrotechnics sales at public events.
