Fires, Storms and an Explosion Strain Emergency Services in Southern Germany

Authorities have moved from rescue to investigation after clustered fires, storm damage and an explosion across Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

Overview

  • A hunting lodge on the grounds of the Regensburg Golf and Country Club in Donaustauf burned out overnight, with police expecting damage in the millions and the cause still unknown.
  • In Ubstadt-Weiher, a blast caused a partial building collapse; a 77-year-old man suffered severe burns and was flown to a specialist clinic, and his 80-year-old wife was lightly injured as the cause is examined.
  • Munich police opened a state-protection probe after a fire was set outside CSU headquarters, where passersby extinguished the flames; the facade was slightly damaged and no one was hurt.
  • Kriminaltechniker are inspecting a large fire at a former mill in Gengenbach that caused at least €1 million in damage, with arson not excluded as Schwarzwaldbahn services are replaced by buses between Offenburg and Haslach.
  • Storms felled a tree onto the Murnau–Oberammergau line, forcing the evacuation of about 40 passengers and an ongoing rail closure with replacement buses, while separate incidents included a high-rise ladder rescue in Munich and a Bidingen machines hall blaze likely traced to a technical defect.
