Firefox 157 Ships Nova Design as Default

Mozilla released the update to pair a broad visual overhaul with new privacy warnings, media performance gains and developer features during a staged rollout.

Overview

  • Mozilla released Firefox 157, which went live Tuesday, and enabled the Nova visual redesign and the revamped sidebar as the default UI for desktop and mobile users.
  • Compact Mode is restored in Settings so users can reduce spacing in toolbars and tabs without editing hidden preferences, while the legacy sidebar can still be re-enabled via about:config until the end of 2027.
  • The release adds a warning when the browser records TLS keys (for example via SSLKEYLOGFILE) so users and admins see when local software could decrypt HTTPS traffic, improving visibility into possible interception.
  • Firefox 157 enables AV1 hardware decoding for WebRTC on supported devices to cut CPU use and battery drain, fixes HDR and A/V sync bugs, and introduces new CSS/web‑dev features such as at-rule() and overscroll-behavior: chain.
  • Mozilla lists 76 security fixes in the release and published coordinated updates for ESR, Tor Browser and Thunderbird, with the company continuing a staged rollout and planning Firefox 158 for mid‑October.
