Firefox 157 Launches Nova Redesign and Restores Compact Mode

Overview

  • Mozilla released Firefox 157 on Tuesday, enabling the new Nova visual system across desktop and mobile while reintroducing a user-facing Compact mode that reduces spacing to show more webpage content.
  • The redesigned sidebar is turned on by default in 157, with users able to restore the previous sidebar via about:config (set sidebar.revamp to false) until the end of 2027.
  • Firefox 157 fixes roughly 76 security issues, including many high‑severity flaws and several use‑after‑free bugs that could allow sandbox escape, and it now warns users when TLS keys are being logged via SSLKEYLOGFILE.
  • On supported devices WebRTC can use hardware decoding for AV1 to lower CPU load and energy use, and the release also patches multiple media and orientation bugs that affected video calls and HDR playback.
  • Developer additions include an at-rule() test inside @supports and the new 'chain' value for overscroll-behavior, while Amazon is removed as a built‑in search engine and ESR, Thunderbird and Tor Browser builds carry corresponding fixes ahead of Firefox 158 on October 13, 2026.
