Firefox 148 Adds One-Click AI Off Switch and Granular Controls

Mozilla says the new settings reflect user feedback and will roll out to Nightly first before reaching all desktop users on February 24.

Overview

  • A central AI controls panel introduces a global “Block AI enhancements” toggle that disables all current and future generative AI features in Firefox.
  • Users can individually enable or block five tools: translations, alt text for images in PDFs, AI-enhanced tab grouping, link previews, and a sidebar chatbot.
  • The chatbot sidebar supports multiple services, including Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.
  • The block option suppresses pop-ups or reminders about AI features, and preferences persist across browser updates.
  • Controls are off by default and respect existing choices, and Mozilla is inviting early feedback via Mozilla Connect as it fulfills CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo’s opt-out pledge.
