Firefighters Tackle Early-Morning Blaze at Derelict Eldon Arms in Ferryhill

Police maintain a cordon with roads closed during ongoing firefighting.

Overview

  • Emergency services were alerted shortly after 4am on January 5 to a fire at the former Eldon Arms Hotel on Eldon Terrace, Ferryhill Station.
  • County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service deployed three fire engines and an aerial ladder platform, with crews using breathing apparatus, hose reels and jets.
  • Two fire engines remained at the scene later in the morning as firefighters continued operations.
  • Durham Constabulary closed the Eldon Arms roundabout at Mainsforth Road and Chilton Lane and asked drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
  • North East Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance crew, duty officers and HART teams, then stood them down; the cause and full extent of damage were not yet determined, though photos showed external damage including to the roof.
