Overview
- The blaze that broke out late Friday largely destroyed the Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle’s Nest, and left the mountaintop building unstable and smoldering.
- Police detained a 33-year-old German man found on a motorcycle near the site and placed him in provisional psychiatric custody while prosecutors investigate suspected arson and possible political motives.
- No injuries were reported and firefighters from multiple municipalities fought the blaze through high winds, rain and the first seasonal snowfall, but crews could not enter the structure because of collapse risk.
- Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria’s interior minister, said the state owns the site and intends to rebuild after forensic teams and structural engineers can safely inspect the interior and plan restoration.
- The Kehlsteinhaus was built for Nazi leaders in 1937–38, was reached and occupied by U.S. Army units in May 1945, and later became a museum and restaurant that drew hundreds of thousands of visitors, complicating how any rebuilding will balance preservation and remembrance.
