Fire Forces Evacuation at La Plata’s Ex Comercial San Martín School

Preliminary expert checks point to overheated, aging electrical wiring as the likely trigger under a probe led by UFI N.º 17.

Overview

  • A blaze broke out near the auditorium of Escuela de Educación Media Nº 31 and staff evacuated students without injuries after flames and heavy smoke were seen around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
  • Three fire crews, local police and the Guardia Urbana extinguished the flames and later dealt with small rekindlings while securing the scene for forensic work.
  • Initial pericial findings indicate long-standing electrical cables in a service/multiuse room overheated and may have started the fire, but the official inquiry by UFI N.º 17 remains open.
  • The auditorium area suffered material damage including burned chairs and benches, soot-stained walls and broken glass, and the Consejo Escolar suspended classes to allow cleaning and repairs.
  • The school serves over a thousand students across shifts, prompting a large community response from parents, alumni and staff and officials plan detailed inspections before activities resume.
