Fire Extinguished After Freight Train–Truck Crash in Smolensk Region

Passenger service on the RudnyaGolynki section remains halted pending a transport safety review.

Overview

  • A truck drove onto a level crossing on a red signal near Ryzhikovo at 07:26, colliding with a freight train and derailing the locomotive and 18 wagons.
  • Emergency officials say six wagons carrying flammable cargo burned, the affected cars were detached, the fire was contained to about 400 square meters, and the blaze is now out.
  • The derailed consist included 12 tank cars with gasoline and four wagons with timber, according to Moscow Railway.
  • The truck driver died at the scene, and the train driver and his assistant sustained moderate injuries and were hospitalized.
  • Rail traffic on the section is suspended, with compensation buses operating between Smolensk and Zaolsha on the trains’ timetable, and a transport prosecutor’s check is underway.
