Fire Erupts on Elevated Mumbai Metro Line 2B in Bandra

Viral video of burning wooden shuttering falling toward traffic prompted an MMRDA probe with reinforced safety checks across metro sites.

Overview

  • MMRDA confirmed late Monday that a blaze broke out at about 10:52 pm on the under-construction Line 2B at pillar P-400, pylon 4 on the fourth level and that the site team and Mumbai Fire Brigade put the fire out by about 11:30 pm.
  • Officials said the fire involved wooden shuttering known as Doka and that no one was injured and no damage to the metro structure was reported.
  • Video footage shared on social media showed flames, thick smoke and burning cinders falling toward vehicles on the road below and those images triggered traffic jams that lasted into the early hours.
  • MMRDA has opened a detailed inquiry into the cause and warned it will enforce safety and contractual remedies against any agency found in breach of rules on the Line 2B package run by J Kumar Infraprojects with AICA Consortium as consultant.
  • The episode highlights risks from combustible formwork used on elevated viaducts and is likely to prompt tighter on-site fire prevention rules and more frequent safety checks that affect workers and commuters who pass beneath ongoing construction.
