Fire Devastates Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler’s Alpine Retreat
Bavarian authorities have opened a criminal probe with a pledge to restore the site after extensive damage.
Overview
- The Kehlsteinhaus caught fire on the night of Friday, Oct. 23, and the blaze largely consumed the historic mountain building.
- About 200 firefighters and emergency personnel fought the fire through the night and into the early hours, with steep terrain, 1,834-meter altitude and bad weather hampering access and operations.
- Emergency teams found no people inside and reported no injuries during or after the response.
- Police temporarily detained a 33-year-old man found on an unplated motorcycle near the scene and are investigating possible arson while the formal cause remains undetermined.
- Built in 1937–38 and preserved after World War II as a restaurant and exhibition, the site’s damage has prompted the Bavarian government to vow recovery and preservation and may affect regional tourism and historical education pending the outcome of the criminal probe.
