Fire Damages La Plata Secondary School as Students Are Evacuated

Peritos from the Dirección de Bomberos are examining the scene under UFI N.º 17 to determine whether an electrical fault started the blaze.

Overview

  • A fire broke out at Escuela de Educación Media Nº 31 (ex Comercial San Martín) on Wednesday morning, prompting the immediate evacuation of students, teachers and staff with no reported injuries.
  • Three fire crews from the Cuartel Central La Plata worked to control the flames while police and the Guardia Urbana secured the area and parents collected children outside the school.
  • Interior damage was concentrated in the salón de actos, where images show burned chairs and benches, soot-stained walls and shattered windows after thick smoke and flames.
  • Investigators from the Dirección de Bomberos were called to the scene and the case was assigned to UFI N.º 17 with intervention of Juzgado de Garantías N.º 5; officials say a short circuit or an appliance left plugged are among the hypotheses but no cause has been confirmed.
  • The school suspended afternoon classes and the community has expressed concern about recent refurbishments and the extent of damage while authorities complete pericias and an electrical safety assessment.
