• Fire appliances from Carlisle East, Carlisle West and Wigton stations were dispatched at 10 am on Monday to Newton Arlosh after four cows broke through a gate and became trapped in firm mud.
• Animal Rescue and Swift Water Rescue specialists worked alongside local farmers to assess the situation and plan the extraction.
• A telehandler provided by a nearby farmer enabled crews to gently pull the cows free from mud reaching up to their necks.
• All four animals were returned to dry land and handed back to their owner without injury.
