Fire Breaks Out Under Atlantic City Boardwalk, Damages Casino Entrance

Despite the damage, Resorts casino remains operational; cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A fire broke out under the Atlantic City Boardwalk, damaging the entrance to Resorts casino, but the facility remained open.
The fire, driven by strong winds, burst through the boardwalk’s slats around 4 p.m., causing black smoke and orange flames to leap beneath the Resorts sign.
Two restaurants near the fire were temporarily closed with hopes to reopen later the same day.
Firefighters cut away a section of the Boardwalk with chainsaws to spray underneath at the source of the blaze, which was brought under control within about 40 minutes.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with possibilities including an electrical malfunction from utilities running underneath the walkway or accidental ignition by homeless people taking shelter under the walkway.
