Fire Breaks Out in UNI Foundry Laboratory, No Injuries Reported

The faculty halted classes to protect the community while technical inspections are carried out to assess damage and the future of the roughly 50-year-old Laboratory No. 5.

Overview

  • A blaze started in the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería’s Foundry Laboratory and was reported to emergency services at about 10:44 a.m. on Friday, October 23, and five units of the Cuerpo General de Bomberos Voluntarios del Perú helped control it.
  • The university and faculty said the fire was quickly extinguished by campus technical staff with firefighter support and that no students or staff were injured.
  • The Facultad de Ingeniería Mecánica suspended all classes for the day by issuing Communiqué N.° 012-2026 and asked course delegates to coordinate recovery of lost hours with instructors.
  • The faculty warned that Laboratory No. 5 is in 'imminent risk' and said repeated requests for refacción to UNI’s central administration had not been addressed, raising questions about deferred maintenance of a facility reported to be about 50 years old.
  • Officials have not confirmed a cause or released a damage assessment and have said resumption of activities will depend on formal safety inspections and technical reports expected in the coming days.
