Fire at Enel Substation in São Gonçalo Triggers Wide Outage Across Rio Metro

Enel attributes the failure to an equipment explosion during overnight storms with lightning.

Overview

  • Firefighters were alerted around 3 a.m. and quickly contained the blaze with no injuries reported.
  • Power supply was interrupted in parts of São Gonçalo, Niterói, Maricá, Itaboraí, Duque de Caxias and Magé after a protective trip at the Alcântara substation.
  • Enel said service was restored to 94% of the 140,151 affected customer units overnight, with repairs continuing for remaining users.
  • The company later reported about 99% restoration by early morning and estimated roughly 4,000 customers still without power, mainly in São Gonçalo.
  • Utility teams performed remote switching and on-site inspections, as city authorities also recorded storm-related flooding in Rio neighborhoods such as Maracanã and São Cristóvão.
