Fire at Central Kolkata Godown Near Police HQ Triggers Evacuations, Traffic Disruption

Investigators suspect an air-conditioning short circuit, with a full inquiry to follow after dousing.

Overview

  • Fire broke out Thursday morning at a multi-storey warehouse on R N Mukherjee Road about 200 metres from Lalbazar, sending thick, chemical-laden smoke across the area.
  • Six fire engines responded, evacuating people from upper floors with no reported casualties as crews worked to contain the blaze.
  • Firefighters reported severe eye and respiratory irritation and low visibility and used oxygen masks, ladders, a smoke-suction machine, and broken windows to vent the building.
  • The congested lanes and the building’s age complicated access, and the warehouse stored computer, motor, and car parts under owner Atherton Engineering.
  • One side of the road was cordoned off during peak hours, and some reports said flames extended to an adjacent godown due to flammable materials.
