Firaxis Targets Spring for Free 'Test of Time' Overhaul of Civilization VII

The studio outlines a two-step update plan that links an imminent patch to a community-tested redesign of core systems.

Overview

  • Update 1.3.2 is going live soon with nested tooltips, civ balance passes, AI diplomacy and coastal raid reworks, Appeal tweaks, a tile-use indicator, and Gilgamesh as a free leader.
  • The expansion-sized Test of Time update is planned as a free release targeting spring 2026 and will undergo community playtesting via the Firaxis Feature Workshop.
  • Players will have the option to remain with a single civilization for an entire game instead of switching each age, with AI making parallel end-of-age decisions.
  • New mechanics include Apex Ages, giving each civ one period with its full unique kit, and Syncretism, allowing adoption of unique units or infrastructure from a civ currently in its Apex Age.
  • Victory conditions are being overhauled into flexible Triumphs that broaden viable paths across Military, Economy, Culture, and Science and enable earlier wins.
