Financial Ombudsman Complaints Fall to Lowest Since Early 2024 After Fee Reforms

Fee reforms for professional representatives have discouraged low-value claims as the FCA plans a motor finance compensation consultation.

Overview

  • FOS processed 68,000 complaints in April–June 2025, 9% fewer than the 74,600 in the same period a year earlier and the lowest level since early 2024.
  • Professional representatives submitted 30,800 cases after April’s £250 fee took effect, down from 36,600 in Q2 2024, indicating a squeeze on marginal claims.
  • Complaints about unaffordable lending fell to 10,000 from 21,600, motor finance cases dropped from 36,000 to 21,500 and fraud claims decreased from 8,800 to 6,800.
  • The Supreme Court’s car mis-selling ruling awarded compensation to only one of three test claimants, limiting the scope for similar cases.
  • The FCA plans a consultation on a motor finance compensation scheme as the FOS and Treasury pursue wider reforms under a ‘fair and reasonable’ framework.
