Final Stretch of Curved Cable-Stayed SCLR Extension and Kalanagar Flyover Arm Opens

Featuring a 215 m orthotropic deck on a Y-shaped pylon, this curved span provides signal-free access to the Western Express Highway, reducing peak commutes by up to 20 minutes.

Overview

  • The MMRDA opened the final 1.9 km arm of the 5.4 km SantacruzChembur Link Road extension on August 14, flagged off by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
  • The bridge’s 215 m orthotropic steel deck, supported by a Y-shaped pylon, was launched in two 140 t and 160 t segments to protect the active Western Express Highway and Metro Line 3 tunnels.
  • With the missing connector now complete, commuters from Kurla and the Bandra-Kurla Complex gain uninterrupted northbound access to the WEH, easing congestion at Vakola and LBS Marg.
  • The inauguration also included the final arm of the Kalanagar Flyover, linking the Sion–Dharavi Link Road directly to the Bandra–Worli Sea Link to unclog Kalanagar Junction.
  • Initiated in 2016 with a ₹450 crore budget, the project faced design revisions, contractor delays, COVID-related and approval slowdowns that pushed costs to around ₹650 crore and led to MMRDA penalties.
