Final Plans Set for 50th NYC Marathon as Major Bridge Closures and Security Deployments Start

Organizers and city agencies have put final logistics and policing in place to protect runners and manage wide travel disruptions across the five boroughs.

Overview

  • The 50th TCS New York City Marathon will run Sunday, Nov. 1, through all five boroughs with roughly 60,000 runners and about 2 to 2.5 million spectators expected.
  • Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the NYPD will post thousands of officers and specialized units along the route and that there are no known specific, credible threats to the event.
  • Race officials will use a revised Bronx segment for the first time in about 15 years, routing runners along Alexander Avenue, East 141st Street, Third Avenue and East 138th Street before crossing the Madison Avenue Bridge.
  • Major closures begin late Saturday and early Sunday, with the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge upper level closing at 11 p.m. Saturday and the lower level closing to non-emergency traffic at 7 a.m. Sunday, and officials expect many crossings to reopen later that day.
  • Organizers highlighted the race’s cultural and fundraising sides with a large celebrity roster and groups such as the Fogo Azul drumline, and they urged spectators to use mass transit, follow bag-inspection rules, and obey posted security instructions.
