Final New Zealand Election Results: National Party's Christopher Luxon Must Seek Broader Support to Govern

After final vote count, New Zealand's National Party loses slim majority and is now required to seek alliance with ACT and New Zealand First parties to form a government.

  • Following the final vote count, Christopher Luxon's National Party has lost its slim majority, forcing him to seek wider support from both the ACT and the New Zealand First parties to build a future government.
  • Despite an initial count giving the National Party and the libertarian ACT Party a narrow majority, the addition of 600,000 special votes led to the National Party losing two seats while opposition parties gained three.
  • The final results from the October 14 election gave the National Party 38%, ACT New Zealand 9%, and New Zealand First 6%. The Labour Party received 27%, Green Party 12% and Indigenous Māori Party 3%.
  • The National Party plans to seek a recount in Jacinda Ardern's former seat of Mount Albert, which the Labour Party held onto by only 20 votes, in contrast to Ardern's previous victory margin of over 20,000 votes.
  • In coming to power, Luxon will also have to navigate a politically charged landscape, as he will need support from a more diverse range of lawmakers to implement his government's plans, potentially slowing down or halting the initiative.
