Final New Orleans Jail Escapee Derrick Groves Captured in Atlanta After SWAT Standoff

The arrest ends a five-month multiagency manhunt, with extradition to Louisiana pending.

Overview

  • A Crimestoppers tip led authorities to a southwest Atlanta home where an APD SWAT team deployed tear gas before a police dog found Groves hiding in a crawl space.
  • Groves was booked into the Fulton County Jail on a fugitive charge and is scheduled for an extradition hearing, after which he faces additional escape-related counts in Louisiana.
  • The coordinated operation involved the U.S. Marshals Service, FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, Louisiana State Police, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, New Orleans police and Atlanta police.
  • Groves was serving a life sentence without parole following 2024 convictions for two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder in a 2018 Mardi Gras shooting.
  • The May 16 breakout exploited a hole behind a toilet and a barbed-wire fence at the Orleans Justice Center, and investigators have charged alleged helpers including former jail employee Darriana Burton and a maintenance worker.
