Final Monsoon Surge Floods Phoenix, Triggers Flight Delays and Rescues

Forecasts point to scattered showers through the weekend before a drier pattern returns next week.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service issued Flood Watches and multiple Flash Flood Warnings across Maricopa County, including a life-threatening alert Friday afternoon and a rare Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of the state.
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor measured 1.64 inches Friday, the wettest day since 2018, lifting the airport’s monsoon total to 2.55 inches and eliminating the seasonal rainfall deficit.
  • The FAA ordered ground stops for Phoenix with delays reaching about 75 minutes at times, and a Sky Harbor spokesperson said 10 flights were diverted before operations largely normalized.
  • First responders carried out water rescues and officials closed several flooded roads, including areas around Scottsdale’s Indian Bend Wash, as utilities reported more than 12,000 outages at the peak with restoration ongoing.
  • A stationary low over Southern California funneled deep moisture into Arizona, with models showing showers tapering after the weekend as warmer, drier weather settles in next week.
