Final Evacuation Alerts Lifted as Conception Bay North Wildfire Is Held

Nearly 200 structures were lost along a 15-kilometre stretch, leaving residents to return to assess damage.

Overview

  • Newfoundland and Labrador ended all remaining evacuation alerts Saturday for Western Bay, Ochre Pit Cove, Kingston and Small Point–Adam's Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove.
  • All evacuation orders were removed Friday after officials reclassified the north shore fire as being held.
  • The wildfire destroyed nearly 200 structures across several coastal communities along a roughly 15‑kilometre corridor on the northwest shore of Conception Bay.
  • Western Bay and Ochre Pit Cove lost a combined 145 structures, and another 33 homes were destroyed in Small Point–Adam's Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove, local officials said.
  • Returning residents have found homes reduced to foundations and chimneys, while firefighters faced drought conditions, limited local water supplies and the absence of hydrants that required tanker deliveries.
