Final August Social Security Wave Lands Aug. 27 as September SSI Pays Early on Aug. 29

The SSA is also withholding portions of some checks to recover past overpayments identified by its inspector general.

Overview

  • Retirement benefits are paid in three August waves: Aug. 13 for birthdays 1–10, Aug. 20 for 11–20, and Aug. 27 for 21–31.
  • Because Sept. 1 is Labor Day, September SSI will be deposited Friday, Aug. 29, with 2025 federal maximums set at $967 for individuals, $1,450 for couples and $484 for essential persons.
  • The SSA advises waiting three working days before reporting a missing deposit.
  • For 2025, the maximum monthly retirement benefit is $5,108 for those who wait until age 70 to claim, while the age‑62 maximum is $2,831 and eligibility begins at 62.
  • An SSA inspector general report found $13.6 billion in overpayments in FY2020–2023, and news reports say the agency is recouping funds by withholding up to 50% from some overpaid beneficiaries unless they qualify for relief.
