Overview

  • The final £6m was drawn from Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s £1.85bn regional transport funding commitment for the North East.
  • Earlier contributions included £35.2m from the Department for Transport and a £6.2m pledge by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government.
  • Restoration works began in April 2024 and involve more than 1,200 separate repairs to steel, concrete, stonework and masonry on the Grade II* listed bridge.
  • Contractors have removed over nine tonnes of pigeon guano, rust and dirt and completed a full repaint and waterproofing of key sections.
  • The project remains on track to mark the Tyne Bridge’s centenary in October 2028, with the first restored sections now visible on the Gateshead side.
