Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma Sentenced to 3 Months Jail in Cheque Bounce Case

A Mumbai court also issued a non-bailable warrant and ordered Varma to pay compensation within three months.

Ram Gopal Varma was convicted under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act for cheque dishonour due to insufficient funds.
The case, initiated in 2018 by complainant Maheshchandra Mishra representing Shree company, involved a Rs 2.38 lakh cheque from Varma's firm.
The Andheri Magistrate Court sentenced Varma to three months of simple imprisonment and issued a non-bailable warrant after he missed the hearing.
Varma has been ordered to pay Rs 3.72 lakh in compensation to the complainant within three months or face an additional three months in jail.
The filmmaker, who has faced financial struggles in recent years, stated the case stemmed from a dispute with a former employee and is being handled by his legal team.
