Figure Skating World Championships Honor Victims of Potomac Plane Crash

A tribute at Boston’s TD Garden commemorated 28 figure skating community members lost in the January 29 collision, emphasizing remembrance, resilience, and calls for aviation safety reforms.

The 2025 World Figure Skating Championships in Boston paused for a solemn tribute to the 28 skaters, parents, and coaches killed in the January 29 Potomac River plane crash.
Doug Lane, who lost his wife and son in the tragedy, urged support for grieving young skaters and called for systemic changes to improve air travel safety.
The ceremony featured speeches by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and ISU President Jae Youl Kim, as well as a performance by Boston’s Coro Allegro Choir.
Reigning world champion Ilia Malinin and other skaters have dedicated their performances at the championships to the memory of the victims.
The crash victims included 11 young skaters aged 11 to 16, with six members of Boston’s Skating Club among those lost, underscoring the tragedy’s deep impact on the local community.
