FIFA Picks U.S. to Host First Women's Club World Cup

The event will act as a live test of hosting plans for a possible 2031 multi‑country World Cup bid and guide reforms to women’s club and international calendars.

Overview

  • On Thursday FIFA confirmed the inaugural 19‑team, quadrennial Women's Club World Cup will be staged in the United States and run from 5 to 30 January 2028.
  • Seven clubs have already qualified for the first edition: Arsenal, Club América, FC Barcelona, Gotham FC, Naegohyang, SC Corinthians and Wuhan Jiangda.
  • FIFA set confederation slot rules that prioritize sporting merit and continental champions from 2024–2027, allocating six places to UEFA, three each to AFC, CAF, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, and one to OFC.
  • The governing body approved a US$2.5 million preparation payment for each federation qualified to the 2027 Women’s World Cup and ordered calendar changes that move the 2027 Women’s Champions Cup knockout matches to late January in Miami.
  • FIFA said the U.S. choice reflects local infrastructure and fan interest and that lessons from the Club World Cup will inform the pending decision on a U.S.-Mexico-Costa Rica-Jamaica 2031 bid and future access and funding models.
