FIFA Details Forged-Document Case Against Malaysia, Confirms Yearlong Bans for Seven Players

FAM pledges an appeal after FIFA's report faults Malaysia's verification process.

Overview

  • FIFA’s 19-page disciplinary report says birth records from Spain, Argentina, Brazil and the Netherlands show the players’ grandparents were not born in Malaysia, contradicting documents submitted by FAM.
  • The committee called the use of falsified paperwork “a form of cheating” and upheld sanctions announced on Sept 26, including a CHF350,000 fine for FAM and CHF2,000 fines plus 12-month bans for each player.
  • The seven suspended players are excluded from immediate selection, including Malaysia’s Oct 9 Asian Cup qualifier against Laos.
  • Malaysia’s 4-0 win over Vietnam on June 10 remains at risk, with potential forfeiture to be decided through ongoing disciplinary and appeal processes.
  • FAM denies intentional wrongdoing, says the players acted in good faith, and will appeal, while FIFA highlighted the NRD’s admission it lacked original handwritten records and issued official copies based on secondary evidence.
