FIFA Bans Seven Malaysia Players for a Year Over Falsified Eligibility

Parties have 10 days to request the reasoned decision, with the eligibility issue headed to FIFA’s Football Tribunal.

Overview

  • FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee sanctioned Malaysia’s federation and seven players for using manipulated documents to field them in a June 10, 2025 qualifier versus Vietnam.
  • The players are banned from all football activities for 12 months effective upon notification, and each must pay a 2,000 CHF fine; the federation was fined 350,000 CHF.
  • Three Argentines are among those suspended: Imanol Machuca (Vélez), Facundo Garcés (Deportivo Alavés) and Rodrigo Holgado (América de Cali).
  • The case was referred to the FIFA Football Tribunal to consider national-team selection and eligibility criteria in the wake of the documentation findings.
  • Malaysia’s federation said it will appeal, and affected clubs in multiple countries must adjust rosters during the suspension period that runs to September 2026.
