Fichtelberg Opens for Skiing as Harz Targets Early January on Stronger Snow Forecasts

Operators are banking on incoming storms to turn limited starts into broader openings.

Overview

  • At Fichtelberg in Oberwiesenthal, the Himmelsleiter run opens Tuesday with roughly 30 centimeters of snow, with a chairlift run and magic carpet slated to follow on Wednesday, according to the lift operator.
  • Thuringia’s Skiarena Silbersattel has launched its season with a single piste reporting up to 40 centimeters of cover, while most slopes remain closed as crews continue artificial snowmaking.
  • The Deutscher Wetterdienst expects repeated snowfall this week, with initial flakes in the Upper Harz and up to 30 centimeters possible late in the week, and 20–25 centimeters in parts of the Erzgebirge around New Year’s.
  • Wurmberg’s operations chief says a start on January 1 or 2 is possible if forecasts verify, notes strong visitor demand, and sets a day ticket at 45 euros, three euros more than last season.
  • Snowmaking remains critical but constrained by wind that disperses machine snow and by limited water supplies after earlier melt, and cross-country in the Thuringian Forest is largely confined to Oberhof’s indoor facility.
