Overview

  • The FIA has mandated titanium skid blocks remain in use at all races through 2025 after testing stainless steel alternatives at Barcelona.
  • All teams are required to carry stainless steel skid blocks as a contingency if grass fire incidents similar to Suzuka recur.
  • A proposal to switch to steel blocks at tracks with grass run-offs was dropped following teams’ performance and weight concerns.
  • Teams reported that steel skid blocks add roughly 750 grams and exhibit quicker heat loss and accelerated wear compared to titanium.
  • Additional stainless steel skid block trials will take place at selected events to assess their impact on safety and performance.
