FIA Names AWS Its Official AI and Cloud Partner

The deal centralizes the FIA’s simulations, licensing, rule analysis on AWS to speed technical work, expand participation, support rule development

Overview

  • A global partnership announced Wednesday between the FIA and Amazon Web Services makes AWS the federation’s Official AI and Cloud Computing Partner to host more FIA services and tools.
  • The FIA will run aerodynamic simulations on AWS high-performance computing and build AI surrogate models to cut compute time, lower energy use and speed analysis of car aerodynamics.
  • Teams led by FIA deputy technical director Dominic Harlow plan to use AI for anomaly detection, secure private large language models for rule checking, and faster post-processing of CFD data while keeping humans as final decision makers.
  • The agreement expands a Digital Licensing Platform first trialled in Canada and Sri Lanka so more national sporting authorities can manage licences, renewals and event administration through a multilingual, cloud-hosted system.
  • The move builds on AWS’s existing F1 work since 2018 and aims to boost safety, sustainability and participation, but it raises IP, explainability and data-security questions that the FIA says will be managed with private models and phased rollouts.
