FIA Invokes First F1 Heat Hazard for Singapore, Triggering Cooling-Vest Rule

Drivers must choose a cooling vest or carry cockpit ballast under safety rules introduced after the 2023 Qatar heat incidents.

Overview

  • Race director Rui Marques declared a Heat Hazard after forecasts showed the Heat Index exceeding the 31°C threshold set in Article 26.19.
  • All cars must be fitted with the Driver Cooling System hardware—pumps, coolant reservoir and heat exchanger—whether or not the driver wears the vest.
  • Any driver who declines the vest must accept 0.5kg of cockpit ballast to eliminate a weight advantage over those using the system.
  • Official forecasts indicate about 32°C on Saturday and 33°C on Sunday, with Singapore’s humidity pushing cockpit perceived temperatures far higher and contributing to significant fluid loss.
  • Teams report the vests are still being refined and may not last a full two-hour race, and multiple outlets report they are set to become mandatory in hot conditions from next season.
