FIA Fines Red Bull €50,000 for Formation-Lap Grid Breach at US Grand Prix

Stewards deemed an attempted return to a closed gate to target McLaren’s Lando Norris tape marker an unsafe act under strict grid safety rules.

Overview

  • Half of the €50,000 penalty is suspended for the rest of 2025 on condition there is no similar breach.
  • The stewards cited failure to follow officials’ instructions after a Red Bull team member re-entered the Gate 1 area as marshals were closing it.
  • Reports from multiple outlets say the individual was trying to remove a pit-wall tape marker McLaren uses to help Norris align in his grid box.
  • Placing such markers, or rivals removing them, is not explicitly regulated, but personnel re-entering the grid once the formation lap starts is prohibited for safety.
  • Red Bull framed the episode as a misunderstanding through team principal Laurent Mekies, and there were no sporting sanctions or changes to Max Verstappen’s victory.
