FIA Expands 2026 Steward Powers to Self-Review Decisions and Use Out-of-Event Panels

The move responds to recent review disputes to speed post‑event rulings via dedicated panels.

Overview

  • From 2026, stewards across Formula 1, other FIA world championships, Formula 2 and Formula 3 can re-examine their own rulings when a significant and relevant new element emerges that was unavailable at the time.
  • The International Sporting Code now permits time-sensitive matters to be handled between events by an out-of-competition panel of at least five experts, normally meeting by video conference with in-person hearings only if complexity warrants and parties accept costs.
  • A different stewarding group can be convened to address post-event issues rather than reconvening the original event stewards, enabling faster resolutions.
  • The reforms follow Williams’ successful Right of Review after the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, which led to Carlos Sainz’s penalty points being rescinded when Liam Lawson’s onboard footage later became available.
  • The FIA says new Concorde Agreement funding will be directed to strengthen stewarding resources and processes.
