FIA Enforces Stricter Front-Wing Flexibility Tests for Spanish Grand Prix

Teams must now design front wings that flex no more than 10mm under symmetric load to curb aero gains on Barcelona’s mixed-speed circuit.

Overview

  • The new directive cuts front-wing deflection allowances from 15mm to 10mm symmetrically and from 20mm to 15mm one-sided under a 100N load and lowers flap flex from 5mm to 3mm under 60N.
  • FIA notified teams in January of the phased clampdown, giving them eight races to adapt their 2025 front-wing designs before the Barcelona tests.
  • McLaren asserts the clampdown will not dent its pace, with team principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown dismissing flexi-wing benefits as minimal.
  • Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur and Mercedes chief Toto Wolff expect gains from their conservative wing stiffness, while Red Bull’s Christian Horner calls the change significant but uncertain in its effect on tyre wear and balance.
  • FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis says further flexibility or stiffness tests could follow later in the season if teams continue to exploit aero-elastic limits.
