FIA Cancels F1 Engine Summit, Leaving V8 Return Unlikely Before 2031

Lack of manufacturer support under F1’s super‑majority rules stalled the bid for an early change.

Overview

  • FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem called off the Sept. 11 London meeting on future power units after manufacturers signaled no consensus for accelerating a V8 plan.
  • Audi and Honda resisted an early switch away from the incoming 2026 turbo‑hybrids, while others were more open to a shorter cycle but not to launching a parallel development program.
  • Under the power unit governance agreement, any fundamental change before 2031 requires approval from the FIA, Formula One Management and four of the five registered manufacturers.
  • The concept under discussion featured a 2.4‑litre V8 running on fully sustainable fuel with a simplified hybrid system intended to reduce cost and weight versus the 2026 units.
  • Teams now expect the 2026 regulations to run through 2030, with Toto Wolff saying OEMs are aligned in principle on a future V8 direction but unwilling to bear a costly overlap before 2031.
