FIA Approves Kyalami Upgrade Plans to Secure Grade 1 Certification

It grants the circuit three years to install enhanced safety features as it vies with two other venues to bring Formula 1 back to South Africa

Overview

  • The FIA has approved plans for Kyalami circuit to upgrade to Grade 1 status, the only certification that allows hosting of Formula 1 world championship events.
  • Designed by UK-based Apex Circuit Design, the five-year upgrade plan focuses on run-off areas, barrier and debris fencing, kerbs and drainage without altering the existing layout.
  • Kyalami circuit, which last hosted a Grand Prix in 1993, now has three years to complete the required works to meet FIA standards.
  • South Africa’s Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture F1 Bid Steering Committee is reviewing expressions of interest from three venues, including Kyalami and two Cape Town proposals.
  • Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has indicated that discussions are ongoing with three African venues, though a final agreement remains pending.
