FHFA Chief Refers Rep. Eric Swalwell to DOJ Over Alleged Mortgage Fraud

The move extends FHFA Director Bill Pulte’s pattern of referring prominent Trump critics over disputed primary-residence filings, a step that does not by itself trigger a Justice Department case.

Overview

  • In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Bill Pulte asked the Justice Department to investigate whether Eric Swalwell misrepresented a Washington, D.C., home as his primary residence to secure loans and refinancing.
  • The referral cites possible mortgage, state and local tax, and insurance fraud tied to several million dollars in financing based on the primary-residence designation.
  • The Justice Department has not confirmed receiving the referral or opening an investigation, and the FHFA’s acting inspector general was notified, according to reports.
  • Swalwell denies wrongdoing, calls the allegations politically motivated, and says he will continue his Jan. 6–related civil lawsuit against President Donald Trump.
  • Pulte has issued similar referrals for Letitia James, Adam Schiff and Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, with only James indicted to date as separate reporting has questioned Pulte’s methods and the FHFA has publicly rejected those claims.
