Ferrari Rebukes Gareca as Peru Wraps Interim Tests Under Barreto

The federation says a new head coach will be appointed in early 2026 as Manuel Barreto returns to youth duties.

Overview

  • Jean Ferrari publicly rejected Ricardo Gareca’s criticism of Peru’s generational change, saying the process should have started during Gareca’s tenure and pointing to his recent results elsewhere.
  • Gareca reiterated there is no possibility of returning to lead the national team “at this moment,” though he would consider coaching a Peruvian club.
  • Under interim Manuel Barreto, Peru logged a 1-1 draw with Russia and a loss to Chile in Sochi friendlies used to expand the player pool, with Russia coach Valeri Karpin judging Chile more organized and at least as technical as Peru.
  • Former FPF president Edwin Oviedo attacked Agustín Lozano’s management and said that if he returned he would again back Gareca, crediting him for taking Peru to a World Cup and a playoff.
  • Luis Advíncula again assumed responsibility for his missed penalty in the 2022 playoff against Australia, reinforcing the broader debate over accountability and renewal.
